LeBron James sat down with Los Angeles Rams superstar Todd Gurley in the latest episode of his HBO series The Shop, which aired Friday, and said that NFL owners are operating with a “slave mentality.” James blasted the system of non-guaranteed contracts in the NFL.
“In the NFL they got a bunch of old white men owning teams and they got that slave mentality,” James said, per the Washington Post. “And it’s like, ‘This is my team. You do what the f*ck I tell y’all to do. Or we get rid of Y’all.’”
James also took the time to show love to the NBA Commissioner Adam Silver for always having the league players best interest.
“I’m so appreciative in our league for our commissioner,” LeBron went on. “He doesn’t mind us having…a real feeling and to be able to express it. It doesn’t even matter if Adam agrees with what we are saying, he at least wants to hear us out. As long as we are doing it in a very educational, non-violent way, then he’s absolutely ok with it.”
James’ sentiment is one shared by many players throughout the NBA. Players have expressed themselves in a number of ways throughout the years, with James famously donning hoodies with his Heat teammates in honor of Trayvon Martin, wearing “I Can’t Breathe” warmup shirts in honor of Eric Garner, and speaking out against police brutality with Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul, and Dwyane Wade at the ESPYS.
For the record, the NFL’s player union isn’t nearly as strong as their NBA counterparts. If they were, a lot of what’s going on in the NFL, wouldn’t be tolerated.
